When policymakers need to find policy solutions to complex problems, they rely on one-pagers and issue briefs to learn about a topic quickly. As a researcher, your work can provide the objective, evidence-based analysis policymakers need to make informed decisions.
One-pagers and issue briefs allow you to synthesize your findings into key takeaways, including policy options and considerations that flow from data and evidence, that policymakers can easily understand and use to inform their decision-making.
This workshop will cover the why and how-to’s of creating a one-pager or issue brief, including:
- How policymakers and their staff rely on and use research and expertise
- Identifying your target audience
- Content, style and section headings of policy one-pagers and issue briefs
- What to do if a policymaker wants to learn more about your work
Sarah Wang, M.P.H., IHPI’s Policy Engagement Program Manager, and Trevor Leatzow, M.P.P., IHPI’s Policy Engagement Specialist, will lead off with a presentation, then take questions. An optional 30-minute session will follow during which IHPI members will outline key messages for their one-pager and identify target audiences, getting real-time feedback from IHPI’s policy engagement experts. A template for one-pager development will also be provided. If you plan to stay for this portion, please come with a recent or upcoming publication in mind.
Lunch will be provided.
Note: This opportunity is only open to members of IHPI or their staff designee.
