When patients present for an acute, unscheduled healthcare need, addressing the medical emergency is our first priority. However, these unplanned encounters between the health system and an individual also hold the potential for a broader contribution to their longterm physical, mental, and social health. This talk examines the potential of these care episodes to promote individual and population health through three examples: hospital-based violence intervention programs, insurance enrollment through hospital linkage, and a novel firearm safety program
