How can we eradicate/reshape the systemic/structural forces that perpetuate occupational health disparities? Also, how can we leverage the changing demographics of our workforce and evolving nature of work to promote health equity?
Work is a central aspect of one’s life, not only in terms of financial security but also shaping experiences and health outcomes in terms of access to services (e.g. health insurance), social support, as well as hazard exposures (e.g. psychosocial stress and chemical exposures). Inequities also exist around exposure and outcomes based on one’s social identity (e.g. being a woman, immigrant, low-wage) and place of work (e.g. work organization, service jobs).
We need holistic and effective assessments and service provisions that take into account where one works. Policies (e.g. workplace, state, federal) are needed protect and promote the health and wellbeing of marginalized workers.
