Dr. Howard's research focuses on improving the quality and safety of surgical care. To that end, he conducts health services research to understand what drives variations in surgical care, then uses those findings to inform scalable quality improvement initiatives. Some of his specific interests include long-term patient outcomes after hernia and bariatric surgery, postoperative opioid prescribing, and health behavior change around the time of surgery.
