Dr. Hemmila’s health services research focuses on surgical outcomes in trauma, burn, and general surgery, utilizing on-site and national clinical databases to evaluate surgical outcomes using advanced statistical methods. Dr. Hemmila concentrates on optimizing patient outcomes in the area of Acute Care Surgery (Trauma, Emergent General Surgery, and Critical Care), and his emphasis has been on blunt thoracic aortic injury, trauma quality improvement, and the relationship of process measures to outcomes in critical care. Since 2006, Dr. Hemmila has been involved in creation and conduct of the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program (ACS-TQIP). He also launched and serves as the program director of the Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program (MTQIP), which brings together trauma centers in Michigan to focus on quality improvement at a statewide level.
