Dr. McCullough’s research focuses on technology and innovation in healthcare with an emphasis on information technology (IT), pharmaceuticals, and empirical methods. Some of his pharmaceutical studies examine the roles of consumer heterogeneity and learning about the value of products as well as the effect of direct-to-consumer advertising on health. He has done extensive work on the effect of electronic health record (EHR) systems on healthcare quality and productivity. Other IT-related work has examined the role of IT in the measurement and dissemination of provider quality information. Another research initiative focuses on the application of machine learning (i.e., big data) techniques to risk adjustment and provider incentives.
