Dr. Lok conducts health services research across a number of areas in hepatology, including viral hepatitis (B and C), liver disease, and cirrhosis. Her work has helped determine which patients with hepatitis B or C should start antiviral treatment, and she has been a key researcher in the testing of new drugs for treatment of chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C, leading to FDA approval of safer and more effective treatments. Some of her work includes research on adherence to hepatitis B medications in clinical practice and methods to improve adherence and response to hepatitis B treatment; outcomes of patients after liver transplantation; functional status of patients with cirrhosis and caregiver burden; and patient and caregiver education to prevent hospital readmissions and to improve patient outcomes.
