A JAMA research letter on the rising cost of insulin by William Herman, M.D., MPH, and colleagues from the University of Melbourne, Australia and the University of Chicago has attracted international media coverage. The team used federal data to chart trends in the cost of a range of blood sugar medications over more than a decade, in constant dollars. Insulin costs tripled, while the cost of metformin went down over time and newer medications experienced a slight rise.
