Broglio elected as inaugural President-Elect of the International Concussion in Sport Group

Dr. Steven Broglio, Director of the U-M Concussion Center, has been elected as the inaugural President-Elect of the International Concussion in Sport Group (CISG), effective January 2024. Broglio is set to assume the role of CISG president in 2025.

The formation of CISG was prompted by growing concern regarding the impact of concussions on athletes, especially those engaged in contact sports. The group was the first to establish standardized guidelines and protocols for managing sport related concussions. 

CISG traces its roots back to the First International Symposium on Concussion in Sport, organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in Vienna in 2001. That symposium brought together experts in sports medicine, neurology, and related fields to discuss and share research and clinical practice around concussion. As a result of the symposium, the CISG was formed, to develop consensus statements and guidelines for the diagnosis, management, and return-to-play decisions for athletes with concussions.

Expressing his gratitude, Broglio stated, “The CISG has fundamentally transformed concussion care around the world.  It’s an honor to be entrusted with moving the organization into the next phase where we can better the health and safety of active individuals worldwide.”.

Although the CISG board was officially created in 2022, Broglio has actively contributed to the group and the consensus process since 2012, during the Zurich, Berlin, and Amsterdam meetings.  Most recently, he co-led the return to learn/sport review that informed the most recent concussion consensus document (Read More: Unveiling the Latest CISG Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport).

Looking ahead, Broglio is eager to advocate for a diverse global representation in CISG’s membership, define organizational goals, and encourage leadership development for continued organizational growth.
