Lee named interim executive director for U-M Medical Group

U-M Health President David C. Miller, M.D., M.P.H., announced that Paul Lee, M.D., J.D., professor of ophthalmology, will be assuming the interim executive director (ED) position for the U-M Medical Group (UMMG), effective July 1.

In this role, Lee will be working closely with the ambulatory care triad leadership team, the clinical chairs, and colleagues across the organization to continue the evolving clinical and operational best practices that will further elevate belonging and inclusion, access to care, safety and quality, and experience for our patients and team members across the clinical enterprise.

In the interim role, Lee will also help support U-M Health’s organizational structure enhancements to separate Ambulatory Care Operations and the medical group into two distinct entities. This will allow for greater focus to refine the ED role and improve how we manage medical care resources and services across the entire health system.

To prepare for a seamless transition with the current ED, Mike Mulholland, M.D., at the end of June, Lee plans to redirect his time and effort in the coming months to focus on UMMG.

A national search for a permanent ED is anticipated to occur this year, with the intent to fill this role by the end of 2022. Once a permanent ED is in place, Lee will return his full effort to his current role as chair of ophthalmology.
