Harris named the inaugural director of the new center which is an expansion and reinvigoration of the Center for the History of Medicine
Lisa H. Harris, M.D., Ph.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology, U-M Medical School (UMMS), was named the inaugural director of the Center for History, Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences in Medicine (CHHASSM) in the Medical School (UMMS), effective January 1, 2025.
CHHASSM is an expansion and reinvigoration of the Center for the History of Medicine and it links disciplines in ways that reflect the evolving nature of medicine, health care, and physicians’ role in society. CHHASSM connects several existing UMMS structures and activities, including the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM), Program in Health and Spirituality, Medical Student Paths of Excellence in Medical Humanities and Ethics, and the Medical Arts Program.
Dr. Harris is the F. Wallace and Janet Jeffries Collegiate Professor of Reproductive Health, an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UMMS and of Women’s and Gender Studies in the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts (LSA). In LSA, she also serves as director of the undergraduate Health Sciences Scholars Program. She formerly served as the associate chair for faculty development and faculty life in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was the founding director of the Fellowship in Complex Family Planning. She is a member of CBSSM and the Institute for Health Policy and Innovation. She has been a Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program Fellow and received the Greenwall Foundation’s 2023 Bernard Lo, M.D., Award in Bioethics.
