The National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) offers unparalleled training for clinicians as change agents driving policy-relevant research and partnerships to improve health and health care. The goal of the program is to address the health care needs of communities, invent new models of care, and achieve higher quality health care at lower cost. We train nurse and physician researchers to serve as leaders and collaborators embedded in communities, healthcare systems, government, foundations, and think tanks in the United States and around the world.
University of Michigan faculty work directly with Scholars to identify and develop projects to cultivate unique research and leadership skills. The program also encourages inter-professional training of physician and nurse researchers to advance the field of healthcare from different perspectives. Scholars who have completed their medical degree and residency training, PhD in Nursing, or Doctor of Nursing Practice, will share this important experience, enhance each other's career trajectories, and build a network of health professionals to lead change in the nation.

NCSP Sandy-Hassmiller Climate & Health Awards announced
Three interdisciplinary teams from the National Clinician Scholars Program have received inaugural IHPI Sandy-Hassmiller Climate & Health Research Awards. Established in 2025 through a gift from Lewis G. Sandy, M.D., and Susan Hassmiller, R.N., Ph.D., FAAN, this grant program supports research collaborations examining the health impacts of climate change. The selected NCSP scholar teams will study the health effects of U.S. data centers, climate-related stress among caregivers, and a community-based disaster recovery program for children and families. The next call for award applications will be announced to NCSP scholars in fall 2026.
