2026 Summer Student Fellowship & Internship Program

Program Overview  

This competitive fellowship and internship program is open to currently enrolled U-M undergraduate, master-level, and doctoral-level students interested in studying the performance, quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare services and health systems. Students and IHPI members from different degree-granting programs have the opportunity to work together on a 10-week interdisciplinary research project during the summer. Accepted students receive a $5,000 stipend.

Faculty Eligibility, Project Submission, and Expectations

• Faculty Eligibility: Any IHPI faculty member may submit a project for student consideration. 
• Project Details: Projects should include details that outline the type of work the students will be assisting with (such as data analysis, project coordination, literature searches, etc.).
• Types of Projects: IHPI members should consider developing projects that include multidisciplinary teams to encourage learning from several perspectives. IHPI members will have an opportunity to submit a project until January 9, 2026.
• Project Submissions: Faculty may post more than one project for student consideration. Faculty may have more than one student apply to the program. However, faculty should only have one student apply per project.
• Posted Projects: Faculty projects will be posted on the IHPI website for students to review from January 19 - February 27, 2026.
• Faculty Interview Students: Students should contact IHPI members to discuss their interest in the project. When emailing the faculty member, students should include their resume and a summary of their interest in the project. IHPI members, or their designated staff, should interview interested students to discuss the project. Once the faculty and student agree to the project, the student must submit a formal application to the program.
• Project Selection and Funding: IHPI will fund up to 24 projects. While a faculty member may have more than one student submit an application for funding, they should only have one student submit an application per project. The IHPI Education and Career Development Advisory Group typically prefers to fund one student per faculty member. Should a student not receive funding for the project, the faculty member can then decide if they would like to offer funding from a different source for the student’s work.

• Student Eligibility: Undergraduate, master, and doctoral students, who are currently enrolled at the University of Michigan during the summer of 2026. Students graduating in spring 2026 and starting a U-M graduate or doctoral program in fall 2026 are also eligible for the program.  
• Doctoral Students: Please be sure to review the funding guidelines outlined on the full student application details page.
• International Students: S&J Students sponsored by the University of Michigan must have on-campus employment eligibility. Please consult the International Center ([email protected]) if you have questions about your status.
• Project Identification and Application Process: Students are responsible for contacting an IHPI member to discuss their interests. When contacting a faculty member, students should email their resume and description of their interest in the project. Faculty should interview the students, and the students and IHPI members must mutually agree on the project before the student applies to the program.
   

Program Description

• 10-week project period between May and August.
• 25-40 hours per week as negotiated with the IHPI member.
• Accepted students receive a $5,000 summer stipend.
• Students have the option of:
  • Reviewing the list of project proposals submitted by an IHPI member from a different degree-granting program (U-M School/College) other than their own and contacting the faculty member to discuss the project.

• Students apply based on their current program of study:
  • Fellowship: Doctoral, medical, and pharmacy students apply for a 10-week summer fellowship.
  • Internship: Undergraduate and master-level students apply for a 10-week summer internship.
• Students interested in receiving internship credit must work with their home academic unit to ensure that all internship requirements are met.
• S&J Students sponsored by the University of Michigan must have on-campus employment eligibility. Please consult the International Center ([email protected]) if you have questions about your status.
• Throughout the summer, students will have the opportunity to engage with U-M leaders, participate in a variety of educational activities, and network with the other internship/fellowship students. Students will be expected to participate in an end-of-program presentation session, where students share details of their projects.
