The IHPI Clinician Scholars Program offers unique clinical and community-based research training through intensive mentorship for clinicians as change agents driving policy-relevant research and partnerships to improve health and healthcare.
This program builds on the very successful foundation of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Clinical Scholars Program for physicians. U-M has trained RWJF Clinical Scholars since 1995 and awarded a master's degree in health and healthcare research to those who completed the program. This new program expands on the RWJF program by including nurse scientists in addition to physicians to address new and emerging inter-professional issues related to healthcare delivery and improving the health of communities. The VA Center for Clinical Management Research, based at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, is also a partner in the U-M program.
The National Clinician Scholars Program partners with organizations sponsoring a number of individual scholar positions and inter-professional training between nurses and physicians. Consistent with the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s “Future of Nursing” report, the program helps transform the healthcare system by providing opportunities for nurses and physicians to serve as full partners in healthcare redesign, improvement, and research. Fundamental elements from the RWJF program such as high-quality mentoring, a tailored curriculum, clinical work, and a national annual meeting are retained in the national program. The program includes physicians who have completed residency training, and nurses with a doctoral degree, including a DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice).
Join us in cultivating health equity, eliminating health disparities, inventing new models of care, and achieving higher quality healthcare at lower cost with and work as leaders and collaborators embedded in communities, healthcare systems, government, foundations, and think tanks in the U.S. and around the world.
