The IHPI Health Data Science Fellowship Program is designed to provide hands-on opportunities to early-career data scientists with a focus on important health services and health policy questions. This program is ideal for individuals who desire a structured learning experience focused on positively impacting healthcare through data analysis.

Program Highlights

Work closely with, and learn from, research and analytic leaders in a top-tier academic institution while applying skills learned in school to real-world scenarios.

Meet regularly with preceptors, including senior staff analysts and faculty, and other colleagues with advanced expertise in data analytics and research. Faculty project mentors will also provide guidance and learning opportunities as fellows work through well-defined research projects.

Take on one to three projects during the year. These projects may result in publication as a lead or co-author in peer-reviewed medical or methods journals, conference presentations, and/or policy briefs.
The cornerstone of the IHPI Health Data Science Fellowship is the opportunity to immediately participate in impactful research and directly help solve important healthcare questions through the application of data science.

Early meetings focus on building foundational knowledge of health services research and the various datasets (electronic health record, administrative claims, etc.) often used for analysis, along with discussion of career goals and interests and project objectives. A structured curriculum with key learning objectives and deliverables will be taught while the fellow learns and applies these approaches for impactful research questions. Further guidance related to the research process, data management, analytic design, and communication of findings will also be provided. These conversations will provide a roadmap for your professional development and ensure an optimal learning experience.
The fellowship emphasizes high-impact project work that is designed to support continuous learning and technical growth. Upon successful completion of the one-year program, fellows are encouraged to continue their careers in data science here at the University of Michigan. Extensions beyond the initial one-year fellow period can also be arranged on an as-needed basis.
The diverse team of mentors and project leads make it a priority to ensure that talented individuals are provided with opportunities to attain employment beyond the fellowship experience.
