Membership Term of Service
The term of service is two years beginning on July 1, 2024. Members will have the option to apply for a second 2-year term, at the invitation of the IHPI Director in consultation with the FAC Chair, if they remain in early faculty status at that time.
Selection Process
The IHPI Director, Managing Director, and a subset of the Institute Leadership Team (ILT) will serve as the primary review and selection committee for new FAC members. Applicants will be evaluated based upon:
- A demonstrated level of engagement within IHPI (e.g. participation in the IHPI Annual Member Forum, attendance at IHPI Research Seminars and/or other key events, ongoing collaborations with other IHPI members, participation in IHPI education and training programs, etc.)
- The ability to meet the time commitments of service (see below). Invitations to serve a second term of service will be based on level of participation during the first term and input from the FAC Chair.
- The areas of anticipated contributions as expressed in the applicant’s interest statement.
- Interdisciplinary representation that diversifies the existing composition of the FAC.
Selected members will be notified by May 31, 2025.
About the FAC
The Institute is committed to fostering the academic and health services research careers of early career faculty members. The FAC was formed in 2016 as a vehicle for early career faculty who are members of IHPI to inform IHPI leadership on ways in which the Institute can best serve the career-development needs of this important and growing segment of its membership.
Mission
The mission of the FAC is to advise IHPI leadership on how to best leverage its resources to promote the success of early career faculty and accelerate the impact of their research.
Priorities
- Advocate for early career faculty professional development programs and community building activities within IHPI.
- Provide perspective and feedback as requested by the IHPI ILT on relevant opportunities and challenges.
- Serve as ambassadors to the early career faculty cohort within IHPI.
Meeting Schedule and Time Commitment
The primary role of the FAC is to advise IHPI leadership on how the Institute can best help support and advance the careers of early career faculty. Service on the FAC should enhance the early career faculty experience while minimizing the time commitment. Meetings are 90 minutes and occur once per quarter, with email interactions in-between as needed. At the Chair’s discretion, the June meeting may be extended to 120 minutes to strategize and discuss the council’s goals for the upcoming year. Members may choose to also be engaged in special projects with additional limited involvement driven by FAC generated ideas (e.g. Early Career Development Workshop and/or Emerging Scholars Exchange Program). Faculty whose primary appointment is on the Flint or Dearborn campus may participate remotely via Zoom as needed.
Membership
The composition of the FAC should reflect, to the extent possible, the interdisciplinary nature of IHPI’s early career faculty membership. Current members of the FAC can be found here.
The FAC will be led by a Chair who will mentor and be supported by a Chair-Elect. Ideally the Chair-Elect candidate will have an established research, clinical, or policy-focused trajectory with a track record of funding. The Chair and Chair-Elect will be designated by the IHPI Director in consultation with the outgoing Chair and the ILT.
The Chair of the FAC will serve as a liaison to the ILT for the duration of his or her term as FAC Chair, participating in ILT meetings as desired and appropriate.
Resources
IHPI staff, under direction of the Managing Director, will provide all administrative support for scheduling meetings, organizing events, and communications.
Additional financial resources will be set aside annually to support activities or initiatives that are aimed at engaging FAC members, are relevant to the mission and vision of IHPI, and offer professional development opportunities for early career faculty. Some examples of such activities could include visiting professorships, special seminars, networking events, workshops, etc. The FAC will submit proposals to the ILT for approval.
