Much of Dr. Shaefer's research focuses on the intersection of poverty and health. He has written about the effects of the expansion of public health insurance for children on household health care costs; and the prevalence of intra-year gaps in health insurance coverage among children. He has also explored barriers to oral health care, a major challenge for low-income children in the U.S., and the viability of one policy proposal to improve access—a mid-level dental provider.
