Message from the Director

Our nation’s healthcare system is at a crossroads. As costs continue to rise, individuals are finding it more and more expensive to stay healthy, and far too many struggle to gain access to quality care. At the same time, insurers, employers and federal and state officials are seeking real, evidence-based solutions.

Of course, these issues are anything but new. Top research hubs like the University of Michigan have been tackling them for decades, making significant headway on many fronts (learn more about U-M milestones in health services research and policy through our interactive timeline). These are also the issues that have defined my career as a physician and a health services researcher for nearly 30 years. While affordability, access, quality and safety are familiar topics, the current climate for bringing about change feels very different. There has never been more momentum behind new collaborations and fresh perspectives.

Thanks for visiting our website. If you have a stake in healthcare policy — and we all do — I hope you’ll stay connected with IHPI:

Together, we’ll chart a brighter healthcare future.
